OUJIGAMA AT A GLANCE

OUJIGAMA is a pottery studio in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, founded in the mid-Edo period. For around 250 years we have carried on Seto's hongyo-yaki stoneware tradition, centred on the suribachi mortar. Today we make suribachi, tableware and flower vases in Shino glaze, the glaze most associated with Seto ware. Forming, glazing and cutting the grooves of each mortar are all done by hand, one piece at a time.

  • Founded: mid-Edo period (18th century), Seto, Japan
  • Main products: suribachi mortars, tableware, flower vases
  • Glazes: Shino (white, pink, blue), ash, black, amber and others
  • Workshop: the moro, built 1900, a Seto City Tangible Cultural Property

WHY OUJIGAMA

Seto materials | White clay from the Seto Group strata and a feldspar-based Shino glaze — both natural materials.

Handwork | Each piece is formed by hand, and the grooves of every suribachi are cut by hand, one bowl at a time. Pieces of the same item vary slightly.

History and the present | A hongyo-yaki studio with around 250 years of history, making vessels for the way people live now.

Cooking tool and tableware | A suribachi is a cooking tool and a serving bowl at once. It belongs in kitchenware and tableware ranges alike.
