ABOUT OUJIGAMA
A Seto ware pottery studio, passed down for around 250 years since the mid-Edo period.
From the beginning our main work has been the suribachi, the Japanese ceramic mortar. Today we also make tableware and flower vases — ceramics for everyday life.
At the centre of our work is Shino glaze, one of the glazes that define Seto ware. Its thick, white surface gives each piece a warm and gentle presence.

MATERIAL
From the clay of Seto.
The ground beneath Seto is formed by the Seto Group, strata laid down between roughly ten and two million years ago. This clay is what made Seto one of Japan's great pottery towns. Every OUJIGAMA piece begins with it.
About Seto ware and Seto clay →SHINO
White, pink and blue Shino.
Applied thickly, Shino glaze fires to a soft, plump white.
CRAFT / MAKING
By hand, one at a time.
Forming, glazing and cutting the grooves of each suribachi are all done in our own workshop.
LIVING WITH OUJIGAMA
Suribachi in everyday life.
Grind, mix, crush — then bring it straight to the table. A suribachi is both a tool and a serving bowl.
